{"id":7641,"date":"2024-11-25T13:46:10","date_gmt":"2024-11-25T13:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=7641"},"modified":"2024-11-25T13:46:16","modified_gmt":"2024-11-25T13:46:16","slug":"status-quo-on-online-casino-regulation-in-france-is-no-longer-sustainable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2024\/11\/25\/status-quo-on-online-casino-regulation-in-france-is-no-longer-sustainable\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Status Quo&#8217; on Online Casino Regulation in France is no Longer Sustainable"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Unsurprisingly the potential launch of France\u2019s regulated casino market was central to discussions at the <strong>AFJEL<\/strong> annual conference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reporting for <strong>SBCNews<\/strong>, <strong>Jake Pollard<\/strong> detailed that there was a focus on responsible gambling, licensing and combatting the illegal market as France\u2019s igaming industry gathered this week for the annual conference organised by its trade body AFJEL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at the event, <strong>Nicolas B\u00e9raud<\/strong>, CEO of French market leader Betclic and President of AFJEL, emphasised his belief that amidst the growth of the illegal market, the \u201cstatus quo is no longer tenable\u201d, with licensed operators simply handicapped and unable to offer a key product to consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When questioned on whether regulation would bring the illegal market into a regulated environment, B\u00e9raud said he was unsure \u201cif it was denial; the topic is not whether it should open, the market is already open\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that French players can find an online casino site on <strong>Google<\/strong> in minutes and \u201cplay without even realising it\u2019s an illegal site\u201d. He also made the point that with an estimated four million players already active and revenues of \u20ac2bn, the illegal market in France is already \u201cthe size of a mature market\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe honestly don\u2019t know if problem gambling rates have gotten worse in recent years, but the four million playing on illegal sites should be brought into a legal setting.
