The UK Government\u2019s Secretary of State has appointed Charles Counsell <\/strong>as the interim Chair of the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC)<\/strong>. His nine-month tenure will begin on 1 February 2025, succeeding Marcus Boyle,<\/strong> who will step down at the end of January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since April 2024, Counsell has served as the Senior Independent Director of the UKGC. Prior to this, he was the CEO of The Pensions Regulator from April 2019 to March 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his time at The Pensions Regulator, Counsell developed a corporate strategy focused on prioritizing the interests of pension savers. He also introduced the first Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Strategy as well as Climate Change strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier in his career, Counsell held the position of CEO of the Money Advice Service and served as Executive Director of Automatic Enrolment at The Pensions Regulator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of next month, Marcus Boyle will conclude his tenure as Chair of the UKGC, a position he has held since September 2021. His term was originally scheduled to end on 4 September 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November, Baroness Twycross, Minister for Gambling, commented on Boyle\u2019s departure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe past three years have been very significant for the Commission, as it takes forward measures set out in the Gambling Act Review and the start of the fourth National Lottery licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
