{"id":8313,"date":"2025-02-03T10:19:38","date_gmt":"2025-02-03T10:19:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=8313"},"modified":"2025-02-03T10:19:43","modified_gmt":"2025-02-03T10:19:43","slug":"nerdwallet-trumps-policies-may-increase-betting-volume","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2025\/02\/03\/nerdwallet-trumps-policies-may-increase-betting-volume\/","title":{"rendered":"NerdWallet: Trump\u2019s Policies May Increase Betting Volume"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A significant portion of <strong>US<\/strong> sports bettors view betting as a form of investment, and a third believe President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2019s economic policies mean they will have more money to gamble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s according to a <strong>NerdWallet<\/strong> report that surveyed nearly <strong>2,100 US adults<\/strong> about their betting habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NerdWallet found that <strong>one in five<\/strong> Americans (20%) say they have bet on sports in the past 12 months, <strong>up 67% from 12%<\/strong> in the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average bettor spent <strong>$3,284<\/strong> on sports betting and other gambling during that time, though it\u2019s worth noting that the median spend was much lower at<strong> $750<\/strong>. About <strong>44%<\/strong> of sports bettors say they rarely bet more than <strong>$20<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>majority of sports bettors (65%)<\/strong> view the activity as a way to make extra money. A notable finding was that a significant proportion would define their betting as an investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey found that <strong>around a third<\/strong> of sports bettors <strong>(31%)<\/strong> view gambling as an investment, but <strong>four in ten (40%) <\/strong>report making a net profit in the last 12 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study also notes that around one in seven sports bettors <strong>(14%)<\/strong> say they have gone into debt to gamble, almost a quarter <strong>(23%) <\/strong>often feel they are struggling to make ends meet, and one in five<strong> (21%)<\/strong> say their partner does not know how much they are spending on gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile successful gambling can be a form of extra income, it\u2019s important to ensure you have your financial priorities in order before you take those risks,\u201d wrote personal finance expert <strong>Elizabeth Ayoola<\/strong> in the report. \u201cThat means having a sufficient emergency fund in place, contributing enough to workplace retirement plans to capture an employee match and paying down high-interest debt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another notable finding is that another group of sports bettors intend to gamble more this year, in part because of their political expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NerdWallet found that <strong>nearly three in 10 (29%)<\/strong> plan to increase the amount they bet in 2025 compared to 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>More<\/strong> <strong>than a third of sports bettors (34%)<\/strong> believe they will have more money to gamble this year as a result of Trump\u2019s economic policies, though the report offers no insight into respondents\u2019 rationale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>third of sports bettors (33%) <\/strong>say they factor gambling into their monthly expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey was conducted online by The Harris Poll on behalf of NerdWallet from December 3-5, 2024, among 2,092 U.S. adults ages 18 and older. Of those, 1,535 had gambled in the past 12 months and 458 had bet on sports in the past 12 months.
