\u200b\u200bHungary\u2019s sports betting and lottery monopoly, Szerencsej\u00e1t\u00e9k Zrt<\/strong>, has been forced to change its leadership ranks. On Tuesday, Andrea Mager<\/strong> announced her resignation as Chair and Chief Executive of Szerencsej\u00e1t\u00e9k Zrt, with immediate effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By order of Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong>, Mager will become a member of the Monetary Council of the Hungarian National Bank (MNB)<\/strong>, effective from 5 March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mager held an exit interview, in which she confirmed taking on her new assignment at the National Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her three-year tenure, Mager oversaw the tender process to launch and manage the new TippmixPro<\/strong> sports betting platform, which was awarded to EveryMatrix<\/strong> in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Szerencsej\u00e1t\u00e9k Zrt required the upgrading of TippmixPro to a new sportsbook, following amendments introduced to Hungary\u2019s Gambling Act<\/strong>, liberalising its fixed-odds betting from 2024 onwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mager told national media that she was proud to have modernised Szerencsej\u00e1t\u00e9k Zrt and helped secure 305.5 billion forints (\u20ac600m) for Hungarian public and cultural bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development coincides with the ongoing reorganisation of senior positions in PM Orb\u00e1n\u2019s Cabinet Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November, Orb\u00e1n sanctioned a leadership change at the National Bank, appointing former Finance Minister Mih\u00e1ly Varga<\/strong> as President of the MNB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orb\u00e1n\u2019s cabinet has been undermined by the US Department of the Treasury\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)<\/strong>, which placed Minister Antal Rog\u00e1n<\/strong> under charges related to the Magnitsky Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of Orb\u00e1n\u2019s most high-profile ministers and closest deputies, Antal Rog\u00e1n, is suspected of playing \u201ca central role in enabling a system in Hungary that has benefited himself and his party at the expense of the Hungarian people,\u201d as detailed by the US State Department<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fidesz <\/strong>(National Conservative) government denies the allegations of Rog\u00e1n\u2019s corruption, stating that the OFAC charges stem from the former Biden administration\u2019s interference in Orb\u00e1n\u2019s premiership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changes impacting gambling will see the National Concession Office – the agency that oversees the governance of Szerencsej\u00e1t\u00e9k Zrt – come under the remit of Minister of National Economy M\u00e1rton Nagy, taking over duties formerly overseen by Antal Rog\u00e1n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, Hungarian developments are closely monitored, as the Orb\u00e1n government is yet to confirm whether it will launch a new tender for the lottery concession of Szerencsej\u00e1t\u00e9k Zrt, which was last competed for in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
