{"id":8788,"date":"2025-03-14T08:39:16","date_gmt":"2025-03-14T08:39:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=8788"},"modified":"2025-03-14T08:39:22","modified_gmt":"2025-03-14T08:39:22","slug":"olympic-casino-fined-e8-4-million-in-baltcap-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2025\/03\/14\/olympic-casino-fined-e8-4-million-in-baltcap-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympic Casino Fined \u20ac8.4 million in BaltCap Case"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Lithuania\u2019s <strong>Olympic Casino Group Baltija<\/strong> has been fined nearly <strong>\u20ac8.4 million<\/strong> for serious regulatory breaches related to the <strong>BaltCap<\/strong> embezzlement case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lithuanian authorities have found that the casino operator, part of Olympic Entertainment Group, failed to properly monitor suspicious transactions and encouraged the gambling addiction of a key suspect in a major financial crime investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Gambling Supervision Authority (LPT)<\/strong> investigation found that <strong>Olympic Casino<\/strong> failed to take sufficient steps to determine the origin of funds from Lithuanian businessman <strong>Sarunas Stepukonis<\/strong> between December 2016 and June 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monitoring of his casino transactions was deemed \u201cformal and ineffective,\u201d despite obvious red flags that should have triggered suspicious activity reports to authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInstead of finding out whether Stepukonis had a gambling problem or reporting it to the supervisory authority, Olympic Casino encouraged him to gamble even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A personal incentive package was prepared for him. A total of \u20ac1.3 million was allocated for this. This \u201cbonus\u201d could only be spent on gambling. Other incentives were also allocated,\u201d said LPT Director <strong>Virginijus Dauk\u0161ys<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fine was calculated based on \u20ac6.4 million that Stepukonis lost at Olympic Casino in Lithuania, with additional fines imposed for the company\u2019s failure to cooperate during the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, investigators found five violations of anti-money laundering and gambling laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the wider investigation into the theft of assets from the private equity fund BaltCap continues to expand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>European Public Prosecutor&#8217;s Office and the Financial Crime Investigation Service<\/strong> have expanded their investigation to include potential violations of embezzlement, illegal business activities, tax evasion, fraudulent accounting and money laundering totaling more than 42 million euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charges have also been brought against an Estonian gambling company and its CEO. Authorities are seeking to recover approximately <strong>31.6 million euros<\/strong> from the Estonian company and more than <strong>5.1 million euros<\/strong> from the Lithuanian gambling company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evidence suggests that Stepukonis lost more than <strong>35 million euros<\/strong> gambling in Lithuanian and Estonian casinos.
