{"id":8950,"date":"2025-03-27T12:53:22","date_gmt":"2025-03-27T12:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=8950"},"modified":"2025-03-27T12:53:28","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T12:53:28","slug":"the-eu-and-uks-ggr-from-gambling-exceeded-e120-billion-in-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2025\/03\/27\/the-eu-and-uks-ggr-from-gambling-exceeded-e120-billion-in-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"The EU and UK\u2019s GGR from gambling exceeded \u20ac120 billion in 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) <\/strong>has revealed that Europe\u2019s betting market recorded total <strong>gross gambling revenue (GGR)<\/strong> of&nbsp; <strong>\u20ac123bn<\/strong> in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spanning across all of the <strong>EU-27 and UK<\/strong> gambling jurisdictions, the latest report \u2013 co-produced with <strong>H2 Gambling Capita<\/strong>l \u2013 utilised aggregated data and forecasts to predict a YoY increase in European online gambling revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The figure consisted of online gambling revenue of \u20ac47.9bn coupled with land-based revenue of \u20ac75.5m. Online revenue was up 2% YoY, representing 39% of total European revenue (2023: 37%), with mobile devices the dominant choice, generating 58% of online revenue (2023: 56%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2% difference was also seen in the total market share of land-based gambling in Europe, but this time showing a downward spiral \u2013 from 63% in 2023 to 61% in 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both statistics are a visual representation of the changing preferences of European customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gambling product breakdown shows lottery as the highest-valued segment, with \u20ac38bn product revenue in 2024. Land-based lottery products were the most prominent (\u20ac30.9bn), with online taking the second place (\u20ac7bn).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Casino games (\u20ac30bn) experienced a reversed trend, where online gambling held the highest value (\u20ac21.5bn), while land-based products were capped at \u20ac8.5bn in revenue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exclusively land-based, gaming machines brought in \u20ac24.9bn in revenue \u2013 a good performance given that they are limited to only one vertical.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Revenue from sports and events betting came in at \u20ac20.1bn for the full 2024, primarily driven by a demand for online products (\u20ac13.7bn).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Results showed a strong contrast between EU jurisdictions when it comes to market variety, EGBA further revealed. Sweden, Finland and Denmark had online gambling penetration rates of more than 68%, while this metric was just 14.2% in Spain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listed by the size of their gambling market, the UK was still at the top with a total value of \u20ac30.8bn. Italy came in second at \u20ac25.5bn, followed by France with \u20ac17.8bn and closely followed by Germany with \u20ac17.7bn.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EGBA believes that the EU gambling market will continue to grow in 2025, reaching \u20ac127.7bn in value by the end of the year (up 3.5% YoY). Online gambling is expected to reach 40% of the total market share and full-year revenues of \u20ac51.1bn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trade body is also expecting land-based gambling to grow, albeit modestly, reaching \u20ac76.6bn by the last day of this year\u2019s December.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Maarten Haijer<\/strong>, Secretary General of EGBA, commented: \u201cEurope\u2019s gambling market showed steady growth in 2024.
