Former Director of Slovakia Department of Finance and Economics, Mrav\u00edkov\u00e1 will succeed incumbent <strong>Martin Boho\u0161<\/strong>, who is due to leave office but will continue his work with \u00daRHH on gambling regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slovakia\u2019s gambling sector faces a period of change because online gambling has experienced rapid growth at this time. As his final act as Director General, Boho\u0161 presented the 2024 annual report to the Slovak government which included market trends and difficulties of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total gambling turnover for 2024 exceeded <strong>\u20ac24.2bn<\/strong> which presented a<strong> 14% growth<\/strong> from the 2023 figures. The net gambling losses from 2024 reached<strong> \u20ac1.45bn<\/strong> after a<strong> 9%<\/strong> increase while tax revenues generated <strong>\u20ac347m <\/strong>for the state budget which was <strong>\u20ac46m<\/strong> higher than 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Online casinos produced the greatest share of wagers with<strong> \u20ac12.8bn <\/strong>while they generated<strong> \u20ac480m<\/strong> in net losses. Online casinos continue to grow their market share significantly through revenue <strong>growth of 29% <\/strong>year over year while their state tax contributions increased <strong>by 35% to \u20ac126m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boho\u0161 highlighted that digital innovation combined with changing consumer behaviours and effective regulatory oversight caused the market transition. The government needs to address the increasing difference between online and land-based gambling because of the \u201chyper divergence\u201d according to Boho\u0161.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total wagers made at casinos and gaming halls under land-based gambling reached <strong>\u20ac8.92 billion<\/strong>. The casino industry tax contributions increased by <strong>26% <\/strong>to reach <strong>\u20ac16.4m<\/strong> but gaming halls saw their contributions drop by <strong>5% to \u20ac58m<\/strong>. Sports betting generated successful results through<strong> \u20ac2.73bn <\/strong>wagers that produced <strong>\u20ac86.91 million<\/strong> in tax revenue from major international sporting events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The growth of unlicensed illegal online platforms continues to be a significant problem. The \u00daRHH blacklisted 89 unlicensed sites during 2024 bringing the total number of blacklisted sites to more than 820. Boho\u0161 emphasised that stronger regulatory measures must be established especially to defend vulnerable gaming participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u00daRHH, introduced its \u2018action plan\u2019 in 2023 to fight aggressive TV and media advertising through modifications&nbsp; to the Republic\u2019s \u201cLaw of Advertising and Media Services\u201d.
