{"id":9822,"date":"2025-06-18T08:59:26","date_gmt":"2025-06-18T07:59:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=9822"},"modified":"2025-06-18T08:59:54","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T07:59:54","slug":"south-korea-proposes-to-revise-approach-to-combating-foreign-gambling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2025\/06\/18\/south-korea-proposes-to-revise-approach-to-combating-foreign-gambling\/","title":{"rendered":"\u200b\u200bSouth Korea Proposes to Revise Approach to Combating Foreign Gambling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Korean government <\/strong>is facing pressure to establish a new task force focused on addressing gambling abroad by Korean nationals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recommendations were made during a policy forum held by<strong> The Korea Times<\/strong> and the<strong> Tourism Sciences Society of Korea (TOSOK)<\/strong>, where industry experts called for the government to assess its approach to gambling by its citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, Koreans can only gamble at a small number of government-approved venues, such as a horse racing track in Seoul, the nation\u2019s capital, and <strong>Kangwon Land,<\/strong> the only casino open to locals. The <strong>17 other casinos <\/strong>present in Korea are exclusively open to foreign visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Korean nationals are also bound by these same rules outside the country\u2019s borders, even when gambling is permitted by local laws. Violations of the rules can be punished by fines or a prison sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, according to data from the <strong>National Gambling Control Commission,<\/strong> the value of overseas gambling by Korean nationals in 2017 was<strong> 4.9 trillion won (\u00a32.7bn), <\/strong>the majority of which was wagered in the Asian gaming hubs of Macau and the Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lee Jae-seok,<\/strong> a professor at Gangneung-Wonju National University, told attendees at the conference: \u201cWhile <strong>Macau<\/strong> and the <strong>Philippines<\/strong> remain key destinations for those who engage in overseas gambling, the market is expanding to neighbouring countries such as <strong>Laos<\/strong>, <strong>Cambodia<\/strong> and <strong>Vietnam<\/strong> and also quickly evolving online.
