SBC CIS Weekly Digest: 9 — 13 January

All sorts of rankings and reports keep on coming as we roll into 2023. Insider Monkey presented their rank of the biggest gambling markets in the world, Nielsen shared their take on the key metrics that every sports sponsors should track in order to get the most out of their investments, the Netherlands debate a new initiative of their populistic-minded politicians to ban gambling advertising, something similar is going on in Bulgaria, where Bulgarian Football Union became outraged with the initiative of their politicians to ban sports sponsorships coming from gambling brands, Finelink’s CEO Ivan Liashenko sat down with SBC CIS to talk about his path to success, IAGR is looking for speakers to take part in their future conference in Botswana, SBC is working to bring the industry professionals together on different continents of the globe by organizing their events in Canada and Barcelona, and a football star that lost his shine, but found new fortunes at the Middle East — read all about this in our digest below.

SBC CIS published an overview of a recent Insider Monkey report, where they made a list of countries ranked by the size of their gambling market. Key takeaway — the casino and online gambling industry worldwide reached a total of $231 billion in 2021, with online gambling is projected to exceed $114 billion in size before the end of this decade, growing at a rate of 11% YoY. The biggest gambling hubs in the world are found in countries such as the USA, the UK, and China.

In the Netherlands, politicians plan to make gambling regulations stricter by limiting the ability to advertise gambling and its derivative products and services. According to the new plan, gambling providers will no longer be able to advertise on television, radio, indoor and outdoor public places, online marketing requirements will be tightened, and sports sponsorship will be banned by the end of 2025. Such a plan faced rigorous criticism from the Dutch Council.  

In many instances the Council’s critique is that the explanatory memorandum is potentially confusing and will give rise to a lack of legal certainty. Thus, a first reading would suggest that the Council is telling the Ministry to ‘explain itself better’ rather than calling for a wholesale re-think of the ban.»

Bulgarian Football Union published a statement with regards to a possible ban on gambling advertising in the country. The prospect of such a ban has raised a lot of issues within the sports community in the country, as many football clubs issued their statements saying that they would face bankruptcy in case the government follows through with the ban.

Ivan Liashenko, the former Chief Marketing Officer at Parimatch, sat down with SBC CIS to talk about his path to success and the lessons he learned along the way. In his interview Liashenko told SBC CIS about the beginning of his career in the finance and fraud analyst role at Parimatch, the way he built out his communication with the team, mistakes he made and ideas he nurtured while being one of the senior officers in the company, that later allowed him to move on to found his own company — Finelink

The International Association of Gambling Regulators (IAGR) is looking for speakers to present their ideas, work, research and experience at the highly anticipated conference that will be held this year in Botswana. Applications are open until February 28, 2023.

IAGR2023 will take place from 16 to 19 October 2023 in Gaborone, Botswana. The conference is an in-person event that will also be streamed live and is expected to draw the attention of gambling regulators, government officials and speakers from around the world.

Canada’s premier gambling and betting event, the Canadian Gaming Summit, returns to the Metro Toronto Convention Center from June 13-15 under the new leadership of SBC, the event and media company behind regional and global industry events such as Casino Beats Summit, SBC Summit North America, SBC Summit Barcelona and SBC Summit Latinoamérica.

At the 26th event, SBC will work closely with the Canadian Gaming Association (CGA), which represents leading Canadian operators and suppliers, to help advance the industry in Canada. SBC will also seek to enlist the support of other key industry players in Canada to make this event one of the best business opportunities of the year and provide the most important insights into the Canadian gaming market.

Speaking of the global iGaming forums, SBC Summit Barcelona, ​​the global iGaming trade show and conference, will return on September 19-21.

More than 10,000 influencers, including 2,000 representatives of operators and 1,000 representatives of affiliates, will attend the exhibition at Fira de Barcelona Montjuïc. The event already boasts over 80 hours of conference content from 300 leading exhibitors and 450 industry-leading professionals.

After a successful exhibition in 2022, SBC is doubling its exhibition space this year due to strong demand. The area will be 38,000 sq. m, which is slightly larger than the home arena of the RCD Espanyol football club, which hosted the SBC football championship last year.

Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo would receive a total of €400 million as he completes his move to the Saudi football club Al Nassr.

Ronaldo will earn over €200m during his tenure at Al Nassr after agreeing to take on the role of World Cup ambassador.

Saudi Arabia plans to bid for hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup and Ronaldo is expected to play a key role in the venture. Ronaldo’s salary will be around 200 million euros, which means the 37-year-old Ronaldo will earn an incredible sum during his time at the new club.
