Ukrainian Regulator Successfully Blocks 75% of Unlicensed Gambling Websites

According to the Ukrainian Commission for Regulation of Gambling and Lottery (KRAIL), after the intervention of the regulator in Ukraine, 72.3% of unlicensed websites stopped working from January 25, 2022 to August 8 of the current year.

Regulatory measures are applied to websites without an appropriate license and that are targeting the citizens of Ukraine. Persons who receive a notice of unauthorized activity from KRAIL must cease their activities in the country within three working days.

KRAIL did not report the number of sites contacted or the names of the operators during this period.

Ukraine is seeking to introduce tougher measures on illegal gambling.

Last month, a new law came into force that defines the procedures for organizations at risk of money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT). This means that operators in Ukraine will be subject to more stringent checks.

Many of KRAIL’s proposals are also included in the government’s 2023 action plan. Among them are changes to the law on the procedure for suspension and revocation of licenses of gambling operators.

However, the future of KRAIL as a gambling regulator in Ukraine remains in doubt: in May, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykhajlo Fedorov introduced a bill proposing to dissolve KRAIL and replace it with a new executive body.
