Kazakhstan Takes Drastic Measures: Ban on Advertising of Sports Betting and Online Casinos

The press service of the Respublica party reported that Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov announced a ban on advertising of betting companies, sweepstakes and online casinos.

Also, the age threshold for participation in gambling will be increased to 25. In addition, for persons on record in the unified register of debtors, alimony defaulters and persons who have overdue debts on bank loans, there will be a ban on participation in gambling. These and other measures are aimed at reducing the severity of the problem of gambling addiction in Kazakhstan, Alikhan Smailov emphasized.

The press service added that the relevant legislative amendments are currently being considered in the Parliament.

Co-chairman of the Respublica party, Ruslan Berdenov, previously submitted a parliamentary request on the activities of betting companies to the country’s Prime Minister. Mr. Berdenov raised an important problem of gambling addiction in society, especially among socially vulnerable and young people. 

The member of the Parliament proposed a number of measures aimed at limiting the spread of gambling addiction, including a ban on advertising on all information platforms, limiting the acceptance of payment cards when paying for the services of bookmakers, as well as implementation of international best practices in combating the addiction.
