The Bulgarian prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) and its president, Borislav Mikhailov. The incident occurred after a protest rally took place in Sofia against the leadership of the BFU, which has been headed by Mikhailov for over 18 years. The prosecutor’s office reported violations and/or crimes of various types (expenditure of public funds, black lottery, etc.).
The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan has banned military and conscript soldiers from participating in gambling, and this prohibition will be extended to the future reserve military service, planned for formation in 2025. This is stated in the message of the country’s Minister of Defense, Ruslan Jaksylykov.
Parliament members in Kazakhstan adopted amendments to the country’s Tax Code, which order gambling business owners to provide reports on bets made by residents of Kazakhstan. At the initiative of members of the Parliament, owners of betting companies and sweepstakes must submit online information about the size of bets, losses and winnings to the tax authorities.
Spelinspektionen has welcomed new changes to Sweden’s Money Laundering Act that will allow the gambling inspectorate to increase financial penalties on gambling-related infringements. The decision was approved by Finansdepartementet, Sweden’s Ministry of Finance, which will allow the inspectorate to increase penalty fees for gambling operators violating AML rules, starting from April 1, 2024.
German gambling trade bodies of DSWV (sports betting) and DOCV (online casino) have alerted federal authorities of “alarming developments in Germany’s online gambling market” and its failure to protect consumers from being targeted by the black market. The warning follows a study undertaken by economist Günther Schnabl of the University of Leipzig, evaluating the effectiveness of laws and protections of Germany’s Interstate Market (GlüNeuRStv). The study’s headline evaluation cites that despite the “efforts of the federal states to steer players towards licensed offers, around half of German online gambling continues to take place in the illegal market”.
